Square Kilometre Array (SKA)
In July 2009, Italy and Australia finalised a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to cooperate in the implementation of a large scale radio telescope, the Square Kilometre Array (SKA).
The MOU will promote collaboration on the SKA project between Italian and Australian government departments, universities, research centres and industry.
SKA will be up to 30 times more sensitive than present day radio telescopes. It should therefore be able to provide some answers to questions about the origins and formation of our universe.
Competing bids for the eventual site location of SKA have been shortlisted to South Africa and Australia (which was recently joined by New Zealand). A final decision on location is expected in 2012. The projected cost of SKA is presently estimated at approximately AUD 2.5 billion.

Australian Institute of Sport (AIS)
European Training Centre (ETC)
The Australian Institute of Sport's European Training Centre (ETC) is expected to be completed by September 2010 and to be fully operational by late 2010. It will be located at Gavirate, in Varese Province, northern Italy.
The ETC will replicate the accommodation, sports medicine and sport science facilities of the AIS in Canberra, Australia, while enabling access to the excellent facilities available in Varese.
The new facilities will also make it easier for Australian athletes and teams to compete in international events and competitions, and to train for those events.
Conferences to be held at the ETC will enable Australian sports physicians and sport scientists to keep up to date with European advances in these areas.
The contract for the construction of the ETC was signed by Mark Peters, Chief Executive Officer, Australian Sports Commission, and Silvio Landonio of the Varese Provincial Government.
With a commitment of AUD$11 million from the Australian Government, and five million euros from the Varese Provincial Government, the agreement is a major step in consolidating sporting relations between Australia and Italy.
