CITIZENSHIP BY DESCENT CHECKLIST OF REQUIREMENTS

In order to have your application processed as quickly as possible please provide ALL the following documentation together with your application. Failure to do so will cause unnecessary delays and may result in refusal of the application. 

The application form must be completed in Englisn and all documents and correspondence must be in English or have Certified English Translation.

§ Application Form 118 Application for registration of Australian citizenship by descent. Please complete all questions as applicable and make sure you have signed the application form to avoid delay in processing. The form may be obtained from http://www.immi.gov.au

§ Full birth certificate of your child (international version please). The birth certificate must include the names of both parents AND the city of birth. The local authorities will issue the birth certificate by virtue of Art. 3 del D.P. 2/5/57 No.432). Estratto Internazionale per Riassunto dai Registri degli Atti di Nascita che includa i nomi dei genitori (le autorita’ locali lo rilasceranno ai sensi dell’Art. 3 del C.P. 2/5/57 No. 432.)

§ Please check that the details of the Australian citizen parent which are given on the child's birth certificate match the details given on that parent's Australian passport/citizenship certificate/birth certificate. If not, you must provide documentary evidence of the name change or name variation. This may include a marriage certificate or a Name Change Certificate from the Ministry of Interior. We cannot process the application or register the child unless this issue is clear and documented.

§ Proof that one of the parents was an Australian citizen at the time of the child's birth. You must provide an original document and a photocopy as we do not provide photocopying services. Acceptable documents of proof of Australian citizenship are:

§ Australian passport of the parent issued after 22 November 1984, or
§ Australian citizenship certificate of the parent, or
§ If the parent was born in Australia, full Australian birth certificate of the parent issued by the relevant Registry of Birth, Deaths and Marriages Office in Australia. Extracts from the Register of Births are not acceptable. Extracts issued by the local authority (eg in Italy) stating that the parent was born in Australia are not acceptable.

§ If the Australian parent is themselves an Australian citizen by descent (i.e. he or she was born outside Australia to Australian parents and registered as an Australian citizen by descent), he/she MUST provide evidence that he/she lived at least two years (cumulatively) in Australia. Evidence may include school/academic records, letters from employers or old passports showing movement stamps in and out of Australia to show proof of two years cumulative residence in Australia for that parent. If you do not have such evidence you must obtain a record of your movements to/from Australia from the Australian Government. Please use form number 424A for this purpose and send your application directly to Australia with the relevant processing fee. The form may be obtained from http://www.immi.gov.au Please do NOT send the application to our office unless you have the necessary documentation.

§ If the child to be registered is over 18 years of age, the following two police certificates must be provided with the application:

1. General Penal Certificate (Certificato Penale Generale). Apply for it at the provincial criminal office (Casellario Giudiziale); and
2. Solicitor General’s Certificate of Pending Charges (Certificato dei Carichi Pendenti della Procura). Please apply for this document at the Solicitor General’s office (Procura). You will be asked to provide identity documents and pay a fee to obtain the documents.


If the child to be registered is over 18 and lived in other countries (after the age of 18) for an aggregated period of 12 months, the child must also provide police certificates from the other countries. Information on how to obtain police certificates from other countries is provided in form 47P available at www.immi.gov.au


§ The application charge to be paid by certified cheque (assegno circolare) payable to the Australian Embassy - Rome. Please refer to website http://www.immi.gov.au for a full list of current charges or listen to the recorded messages available by calling 06/85272.1.


OUR AVERAGE PROCESSING TIME IS 4 WEEKS IF YOU LODGE A COMPLETE APPLICATION.
If you plan to travel to Australia within one month or less of lodging this application, please include a note to this effect.
